Celebrating Summer: Beauty and Bounty After a Year in the Underworld

The first days of summer are here and like our ancestors, it’s time to celebrate the beauty and bounty of the earth.

Ancient myths tell us that in the company of compassionate women, Demeter renewed her soul and the bounty of the earth, simultaneously. Through laughter and joy, she was renewed.

Her reunion with Persephone after a season apart, re-greened the earth. The reunion of mother and daughter gave birth to the Eleusinian mysteries; the rites celebrating the eternal cycles of life, death, and rebirth.

Cerriwydrin, the great Celtic mother has stirred her cauldron, turning the wheel of time and the earth is once again fruitful.

Inanna has been resurrected and set free from the underworld, where she was stripped of power and identity. She faced her fears and returned with new understandings.

The summer solstice has just passed. The ancient pagan celebration of Litha, with its hilltop bonfires, celebrated the power of the sun and the solar cycle of life. It reminds us of the blessings and bounties of the season.

Now in our summer of reunions and love, the blossoming of our hopes and dreams is mirrored in the splendor of summer.

The losses we have suffered and all that we have endured, must not steal our joy forever.

Join me in celebrating the beauty and the mythology of the season!

Gathering just after the summer solstice we'll explore these myths of return from the underworld and rebirth. We'll celebrate the beauty of high summer, the bounty of nature, and life itself. We'll discuss the power of renewal and the seasons to recharge our batteries and inspire our next chapters!

We'll share our goals and dreams for what's next in our lives and discuss creating an action plan to get started.

Dr. A. is a cultural mythologist and women's coach. Join her in inspirational conversations, held online, about the big picture of being a woman in these times.

In each conversation, as women have done for millennia, we will gather at the well (ours will be virtual) to support each other and to find wisdom, insight, and clarity in uncertain times.
